Poundland crash – pedestrian in hospital after being hit by car

A woman has been taken to hospital after being hit by a car which then crashed into the front of a Poundland store in Birmingham. The incident unfolded in Longbridge earlier this morning, October 4, sparking a huge response from the emergency services[1].

West Midlands Ambulance Service[2] said the car involved had collided with a pedestrian before it smashed into the shop shortly before midday. An ambulance spokesperson said: "Two ambulances attended the scene.

"On arrival we discovered two patients. The driver of the car, a man, was treated for a suspected medical episode before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham[3].

"The pedestrian, a woman, was treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to the same hospital."

Extensive damage has been caused to the front of the Poundland store while glass can be seen littering the ground. Poundland told BirminghamLive[5] that it was not aware of any serious injuries to staff members or customers following the incident but added it had been a "distressing event" for those involved.

A spokesperson for the chain said: "We can confirm that just before midday, a car drove into the front of our Longbridge store. While it would be wrong to speculate as to why this occurred, we’re grateful for the prompt attendance of the emergency services who’ve dealt with the incident and ensured those involved were swiftly transported to hospital and we wish them a speedy recovery.

"We’re not aware of any serious injuries to customers or colleagues but this was an unexpected and distressing event for all those involved. It goes without saying we’re offering every support to our colleagues in the store."

"The store will remain closed until we’ve assessed the damage and made the building secure. We obviously apologise to customers for the inconvenience."
