Signs are right for Dunfermline to be put on new road signs

MP Douglas Chapman has backed a local constituent's plea for visitors and tourists to be directed towards Scotland's newest city and said new road signs can help it to become a "major destination".

David Cargill, a long-term campaigner on the issue, contacted the politician to highlight the new review of primary destinations in Scotland with the hope of ensuring that Dunfermline will literally be on the map for road users.

Mr Chapman, the SNP MP for Dunfermline and West Fife,  explained: “Mr Cargill got in touch a few years back when we successfully called for Transport Scotland to add 'Dunfermline' to the forward destination signage travelling northbound on the Queensferry Crossing.

"The new initiative comes in the wake of our recognition as a city, and we now know that Dunfermline is in the short list of Scottish primary destinations on the trunk road network as part of Transport Scotland’s comprehensive review and engagement with stakeholders.

“In correspondence with Transport Scotland, I have been reassured that Dunfermline, with our new city status, growing population, our strategic location and increasing popularity as a tourist destination, is on the proposed list for new and replacement signs.

"A successful inclusion would reflect the strength of feeling in the community here in Dunfermline that our new city should be recognised as a major destination in Scotland.”

The consultation started last month and has invited input from all local authorities, road operating companies, road haulage and freight representative organisations, AA and RAC, Visit Scotland, Historic Scotland, National Parks and Regional Transport Partnerships.

It is due to end today (Friday) with a final paper published in February next year.
